Take 251 North where you can catch 380 West into the country covered by the Cross Plains Road Trip Map. A short way out you will encounter the marker for the Elm Creek Raid and once you turn south on 283, you'll be just east of Robert E. Lee's old command post, Camp Cooper and the Comanche Reservation. Visit Fort Griffin, Albany and Fort Phantom Hill and continue through Abilene on the Texas Fort Trail. Travel south through Forts Chadbourne and Concho into the Hill Country at Fort McKavett.

Continue north on 251 to pass through Olney catching 79 through Archer City on your way to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Take the opportunity to visit the Salt Creek Fight Marker, just east of Olney on 114.

The adventurous with plenty of time should consider continuing west on 114 to Seymour catching 183 North through Vernon, Doan's Crossing and Frederick, Oklahoma. Alternatively 25 out of Archer City through Electra will also connect with 183 North across the Red River to Frederick. Click on the Red River Road Trip Map to access my recommended route east through the Wichita Mountains to Fort Sill.
