Rice, Flores Fight at the San Gabriel, May 17, 1839

Mexican-Indian agent Manuel Flores departed Matamoros in late April to rendezvous with Cordova and his men.

About 2:00 p.m. Rice and seventeen of his rangers pursued the attackers.

Rice and his men discovered papers linking Cordova, Flores and the Mexican government in a conspiracy with the Texas Indians to drive out the white settlers in Texas.
